Ren Hang doesn't have a lot to say about himself. In the fine art environment, where emphasizing one's own importance (or having representation to do so, while you maintain the air of expensive mystery) is the norm, this resistance to pretense could be considered a form of madness. But this hasn't stopped the twenty-seven-year-old photographer, who's gained international recognition by aiming his camera up the skirt of Chinese culture, and deeper, into its heart. Hang's aesthetic varies, but sexuality, freedom, intimacy, China, and a certain joie de vivre are themes that surface throughout all of his work. There are moody, apocalyptic images of the city where he lives and works, with mysterious girls and boys looking out of dirty windows, clinging to each other, their vulnerable bodies arranged amidst towering cement and steel. There are lush shots of naked people romping amidst countryside greenery, strewed in cabbage patches, posed on mountaintops. And lately, there is more and more extra-raw nudity, kaleidoscopic configurations of human flesh, props ranging from comical fruit and children's toys to makeshift fetish objects, bodily fluids and live animals – all in tense, flash-lit, dead-pan compositions that make the audience into voyeurs, whether we like it or not. From an interview with Ren Hang over at Ponczblog: What my pictures are discussing about is survival. I don’t wanna isolate human being from animals or plants, and I don’t want others having the impression that Chinese people are robots with no cocks or pussies, or they do have sexual genitals but always keep them as some secret treasures, I wanna say that our cocks and pussies are not embarrassing at all. Therefore my works are not only showing the importance of sexual genitals but also explaining that human being is just a form of existence. True freedom should be forgetting the concept of freedom. Hang aims to lift (and maybe pee on) the veneer of pretense around Chinese sexuality, and to expose the sometimes beautiful, sometimes grotesque, and always playful humanity underneath. In China, where nudity in art is risky business, exploring the shadow side with such buoyancy comes with a price: Ren Hang's been exhibited internationally, but his work is denounced as pornography and banned from galleries in his home country. His cameras have been confiscated, he's been arrested, his photos have been spat on in galleries. Self-publishing books of his work was a gamble, as was distribution. The printing itself was a hurdle and had to be done in secret, after hours, as it was difficult to find a press willing to take on the threat of being shut down. Still, he continues to shoot and exhibit, meeting like minds online, finding representation and publishers overseas while sustaining his arduous love for his country. From an interview with Vice: "I love China and I like shooting Chinese people. I was born here and I feel a big connection with my hometown. True, I'm restricted here, but the more I'm limited by my country, the more I want my country to take me in and accept me for who I am and what I do. The AltBeijing crew got an unprecedented look into Ren Hang's process, following the reclusive photographer from his apartment, where we leafed through a huge scrapbook filled with black-and-white photos and intimate objects like locks of hair and used condoms, to a clandestine photo-shoot at the filthiest motel I've set foot (and been topless) in, to date. This video is very Not Safe For Work - consider yourselves warned. Visit Ren Hang's official website for much more, including his limited edition books. Special thanks to We Play Records for the music in the feature, and to Ren Hang for sharing those delicious spicy squid snacks. Chen Man has been bending rules and augmenting reality at the forefront of Chinese fashion photography for over a decade. Her seductive, dreamy images in Vision magazine back in the early 2000s propelled her to fame and soon led to gigs with MAC Cosmetics, Elle, Vogue and Bazaar. In 2012, Chen worked with i-D magazine to create twelve covers for their "Year of the Dragon" issue, and the projects keep on coming. Employing themes like water, authenticity, love and Chinese culture, to name a few, Chen Man's beautiful, frenetic and decidedly strange universe stirs the imagination with each new shot. We talked with Chen at her multimedia company, Studio 6. Between fussing with a radioactive orange top, being blotted by assistants and sipping tea, she revealed a charismatic, self-assured young woman, conscious of her unique role, eager to tackle the world and her responsibility within it – bringing modernism to China and bringing China to the West. Here, Chen Man discusses changing mediums, art world acceptance, pioneering the Chinese fashion scene and about using the visual language she's developed to change the world. http://www.chenmaner.com Music: http://am444.com/ For more videos visit out project's site - www.alternativebeijing.com

Vega Zaichi Wang is one of China’s brightest fashion designers on the rise. Her dramatic, instantly-recognizable collections (women’s only, for now) echo military fashion and menswear, and are informed by Vega’s own experiences. Be it growing up as a tomboy, studying abroad, unexpected inspiration (off-camera, she told us about a former employee who once inspired an entire line), or her fascination with the arcane, Vega weaves every aspect of herself into her work. We visited the tattooed, pint-sized designer in her brand-new hutong studio, where the downstairs showroom awed us with numerous displays of impeccably-tailored clothes. Taxidermia and antique scissors decorate Vega’s private upstairs office, with a balcony overlooking the stone maze of bustling, sunlit alleyways below – this is where we set up shop. Between sipping icy soda and watching macabre internet videos, she discussed her philosophy, her work and the incredible chance she got while studying at Central Saint Martins in the UK. http://www.vegawang.com Text: Zoetica Ebb - www.biorequiem.com

Iconic subcultural imagery and gender-flexible patterns (and models) have become the trademarks of Zhang Chi - a young Beijing designer not afraid to take fashion tips from the dark side. Like Vega Wang, whom we featured a couple of months ago, Chi studied abroad, returning to Beijing in late 2000s to put his education to good use in the fertile Chinese market - gaining traction first as a stylist and then as designer to the local stars. His runway shows often cause a stir: jewel-encrusted gas masks and pretty boys in thigh-high boots are just some of what you can expect. We met Chi on the rooftop of his spacious new atelier (think minimal, crystal chandeliers and vintage arcade games) to talk about his roots, his work and about being an innovative designer in the relatively new and conservative Chinese fashion scene. Here are some of the pieces he shows us: During our chat, Zhang Chi sited the video game, "Diablo", as one of his influences for a recent collection, then switched gears to name a Russian symphony about a mountaintop witches' sabbath as another. His other inspirations for that same collection? Military uniforms and leather fetish-wear alongside pretty flower prints, which all ad up to make a perfect kind of sense in Beijing – the city of contrasts. zhang-chi.com Text: Zoetica Ebb, www.biorequiem.com

Birdhead (Ji Weiyu and Song Tao) is a photography duo whose mainly black-and-white snapshots of everyday Shanghai and its people skyrocketed them to unexpected art-stardom in the early 2000s. Commonly described as “stream of consciousness photography”, their work focuses on the unsung, ephemeral aspects of daily life. Birdhead’s prolific, compulsive documentation of their friends and surroundings has led them to exhibit internationally, including a part in a current show at MoMA NYC. We sat down with Song Tao and Ji Weiyu to talk about collaboration and priorities amidst the onset of fame. http://www.shanghartgallery.com/galleryarchive/artists/name/birdhead http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1277 For more videos visit: www.alternativebeijing.com

Text by The Avant-Garde-Diaries: As the former publisher of Tokion, a New York-based magazine about art, music, fashion, and film, Chris Ambrose is a taste-maker in the field of contemporary culture. When we approached him to show us someone he considers truly avant-garde, Paris Smeraldo was the first name that popped up. "Paris decided to open a farm-to-table organic restaurant in Bushwick in 2005 when there was nothing else in the neighborhood other than auto body shops, discount bodegas, and abandoned cars,” Chris recalls. The restaurant is called Northeast Kingdom, and since it opened its doors in the desolate northeastern part of Brooklyn, the neighborhood has developed rapidly and attracted artists and musicians for the cheap rent and huge loft spaces available for performances and studio space. It also must be said that Northeast Kingdom opened the door for other higher-end restaurants in the neighborhood.
